Uses: Like quail, turkeys need good habitat for brood-rearing and feeding areas. WingMaster Wild Turkey seed mixture produces abundant seed and in turn insects to meet these needs. Turkey poult diets, for the first few weeks, consist primarily of high protein insects so areas attractive to insects are critical to their survival. In addition, a healthy turkey population will need a variety of plant matter to provide seed, leaves, tubers, fruits, forbs and grasses for a consistent year round food supply. PlotToppers Snow mix is for areas prone to heavy snow.

The most stressful time of year for deer is winter, especially in the northern states where deep snow and temperatures below 0 are common. Native vegetation is dormant and poor quality, much is out of the reach of deer or buried under snow. There is a food plot mix that helps deer (especially rutted out buck scrambling to regain body weight lost during the rut) survive through this critical period. The mix contains 5 different Brassicas or members of the mustard/turnip family. Plant this mix in August giving it time to fully mature before November cold halts its growth. Five pounds per acre is all you need because the seed is tiny and plant crowding will occur if seeding rate is increased. Fertilize with 300 lbs/acre of 19-19-19 at planting. Deer will nibble on some of these Brassica species in the early seedling stages depending on local deer density and other available food. You don't want them to hit it very hard, the objective is to build up forage for December-March. By November freezes, the leafy Brassicas will be three feet tall and the turnips will be softball sized! The freezes will turn the starches to sugar and make the huge leaves tasty and attractive to deer. The deer seem to know it immediately and attack the plants with great vigor. Even snow cover won't impede them as they paw and dig their way through the snow to reach the wilted forage. The only question is how long it will last. The big field of five or more acres may make it through March with food to spare but a one acre plot may be totally gone by January if the deer population is high. A word of caution: if deer have never seen these plants before, they may be a little slow figuring out what they are and how good it is!

Oasis forage chicory is a broad leaved perennial herb that has been bred for improved disease resistance, which significantly increases survival under grazing. Protein levels in chicory range from 10% to 32%, depending on plant maturity. Digestibility of chicory leaves is generally between 90% and 95%. Chicory contains relatively high levels of minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, and sodium) which are essential for proper animal nutrition. Chicory also has a deep taproot which provides excellent drought tolerance. All of these characteristics combine to make Oasis chicory an ideal choice for wildlife food plots.In the South, plant in the spring or fall. Plant seeds no deeper than � to � inch. It is important to have good seed-to-soil contact and not have the seed planted to deep. Oasis chicory should be planted at the rate of 4-5 lbs per acre. For mixtures, plant 2 to 3 lbs.Oasis chicory performs best in pH levels of 5.6 or greater. It may therefore be necessary to raise the pH by broadcasting lime. Broadcast 300 lbs of 10-10-10 per acre at initial planting. If chicory is grown without a legume (clover or alfalfa), apply 100-150lbs of Nitrogen per acre per year in split applications of 50 lbs per acre. The first application should be in made in early spring, the second in early summer, and the third in early fall. Appin has a significantly higher proportion of leaf yield compared to other turnips, and is multi-crowned for improved re-growth potential. Appin can be used to supplement or extend the grazing season when cool season pastures tend to slow down. It can also be used as a break crop in order to convert older pastures to different species and newer varieties. Pasja is an early maturing (50-70 days) hybrid forage brassica. It has been bred for rapid growth and high performance, with a high leaf-to-bulb ratio. Pasja can be used over a much longer period of time than the traditional rape cultivars. It has excellent re-growth ability and will provide good leafy summer feed.Pasja is very productive and has produced over 4 tons of dry matter per acre. It produces exceptionally leafy forage with good nutritional value.

Applications:
Pasja can be used to supplement or extend the grazing season when cool season pastures tend to slow down. It adds high quality forage to the summer diet and can be sown along with BMR-Sorghum-Sudangrass. It will re-grow along with the sudangrass and provide multiple grazings. If sown with cereal grains or annual ryegrass in the spring or late summer, Pasja will provide excellent tonnage and high quality forage for multiple grazings. Pasja works well flown into standing corn with rye, oats and annual ryegrass in late summer. Pasja can also be used as a break crop in order to convert older pastures to different species and newer varieties. - Start by grazing for no more than 1-2 hours per day. Slowly increase to a maximum intake over at least 7-10 days to allow rumen to adjust.

How to Use Mineral/Salt Mixes

Mineral supplements should be placed in February (South) and March (North) to coincide with spring green-up. Any earlier than this will waste salt because it leaches downward through the soil during rain events before deer begin using it. Apply the mineral salt at the rate of about one 50-lb bag per 200 acres for easy access by all deer. Dig a shallow depression on a flat surface of clay soil and mix the salt with the soil. Reapply pure salt and mix with dirt in June. No salt is needed for fall or winter when deer quit using it anyway. Look for bag salt with an analysis of 25-40% Sodium Chloride, 16-18% Calcium and 8-10% Phosphorus. Block salt does not contain enough Calcium and Phosphorus which is essential for antler growth, doe lactation and fawn rearing. According to your soil tests, both are limiting on your propery and may be contributing to your skull fracture problems. Cooper Seed Co. has this high Calcium/Phosphorus salt for a very reasonable price.

Kestrel is a full maturity leafy kale variety with short stems (150-220 days to grazing). Kestrel was bred to have a low-fiber stem with high digestibility.

Kestrel can be used to extend the grazing season as the cool season pasture season ends. The leaves and stems are highly digestible. Suitable for dairy, beef, and sheep. Kestrel can also be used as a break crop in order to convert older pastures to different species and newer varieties. An annual crop gives a bigger window to eliminate the old undesirable forage through the use of herbicides, tillage, and the competition of the brassica crop itself.

Barkant TurnipBarkant is a very vigorous diploid turnip variety with a purple tankard root type. The variety has a very good leaf and root yield with high sugar and dry-matter content. Ideally suited for grazing with sheep and cattle, it is common to obtain 4 to 6 tons of dry-matter per acre of this high-energy feed. Barkant is able to provide multiple harvests with the correct grazing management.

Uses: Rackmaster� Durana White Clover is the newest white clover on the market for whitetail deer management. Durana was developed by Dr. Joe Bouton, while at the University of Georgia, to persist under grazing pressure, tolerate acidic soils, compete aggressively with weeds and grasses and to tolerate low management situations. Durana, unlike ladino clover, is an intermediate white clover. Intermediate clovers have a medium leaf size and a leaf density that is very thick, from the ground to the top of the plant. This leaf density will help prevent weed invasion. Durana possesses a high stolon density; it has 97 stolons per square foot, unlike conventional ladino clovers which only have 52 per square foot. It is pre-inoculated and lime coated for easy seeding and optimal nitrogen fixation. Durana will outlast conventional ladino clovers in food plots and persist for years on good moisture holding soils. With protein levels of over 25% and digestibility of over 75%, Durana will make an excellent pure stand or combination planting for any food plot to feed, attract and hold game on your property. Durana is persistent, productive and a highly preerred white clover.

Berseem clover does best in creek and river bottoms and on neutral to high pH clay soils. It has good tolerance to poor drainage. If under water to 3 to 5 days, the top growth will die but new growth will begin at the crown. Early forage production is excellent near the Gulf Coast where winters are mild. Berseem lacks cold tolerance and can winter-kill if planted too far north. Reseeding is poor because of low hard seed production.
