| Cucumber
Cucumbers require an open, porous, non-acidic soil for good development. The ground should be fertile, that is, fortified with organic matter and mineral nutrients. An abundance of moisture is needed to produce satisfactory crops. Cucumbers are hot weather plants and should be planted only after the weather has become settled and warm. When planted in hills 4 to 6 feet apart, they require lots of space in the garden, but they can also be successfully grown in a trellis. They require full sun and frequently cultivated soil. The young plants are often attacked by insects and should not be thinned until they are large enough to be safe. Fruit should be harvested often as over-mature fruit, when left on the vine, will depress production. |
